About the painting, Ivan states: Nothing but the Pacific lies between these dunes and Asia.  Every winter the dunes bear the full brunt of our Oregon Coast gale force winds which remodel them into these elegant pristine shapes.  Quite ordinary at midday, they take on a special quality of light, shadow and color in the early morning sun.

"Sculptured by Pacific Storms" depicts one of the sweeping beaches that are among Kelly's subjects, which include marine, landscapes, wildlife and still life.  It is among 86 paintings and seven three-dimensional peces the jury of 20 ASMA "Fellows" members selected from more than 450 works submitted. ASMA President Russ Kramer called the painting a "terrific contribution to a very impressive collection of art representing the very best work of our membership, one we can all be very proud of as it travels to eight prestigious museums across the country." They include public art museums through Florida, Alabama, Texas, California, Oregon and Minnesota. The tour starts in October, 2011 and ends in July, 2013. Along with the juried exhibit will be a 100-plus page full-color catalog of the show.

The American Society of Marine Artists was founded in 1978 by a small group of the country's leading maritime artists. They were looking for mutual support and companionship, to enhance public awareness of the genre, to explore and record the history of American marine art. Nationwide current membership of over 500 is distributed across 40 states. National exhibitions are held at roughly three-year intervals (the 2012-13 show will be our 15th) and they take place in public museums. ASMA also holds periodic Regional exhibitions

Ivan's marine oil paintings were also juried in the previous 13th and 14th National Exhibits & Exhibition catalogs. He was awarded "Signature Member" status in 2000.
