Light On The Landscape

I was born in Northern Ireland and spent my childhood on a farm.  Roaming the fields, mountains and coasts of that beautifully diverse country instilled a love for the landscape and its animals both wild and domestic.

After emigrating to Canada in 1972, I began to paint in the mountains of Western Canada.  I became very passionate about portraying big game animals I n their natural habitat.  My studies took me to the Okanagan Game Farm where I ran into Robert Lougheed and several other master painters.  Bob persuaded me to lay down my pencil and sketchbook and bring my easel and paints next time.

I will always remember how easy Bob made it look.  His ability to paint landscapes with multiple figures and animals from life was unparalleled (and still is).

Of course painting animals from life was anything but easy for me, but I will never forget his gentle demeanor, work ethic and encouragement.  In 1992 my wife and I moved to the Oregon Coast where we built a studio and showplace for my work.

For several years I expanded my subject matter to include the dramatic and often challenging moods of the Northwest Pacific Coast where the light and weather is ever changing.

However, it was inevitable that the Western mountains and their wildlife would grab hold of me again and gradually they are becoming a major part of my work again.

For a landscape and animal painter, it’s hard to better a frosty Fall morning in the Grand Tetons, Banff or Yellowstone where a heavy antlered moose walks through camp or a rutting bull elk bugles from the adjoining meadow.

Other artists whose work I admire and get inspiration are Rien Poortvliet, Richard Friese, Manfred Schatz and this Continent’s masters, Carl Rungius and Bob Kuhn.
